Summer Arts Institute (SAI) is a free, 4-week program for public school students entering grades 8 through 12 at an intermediate or advanced level of their discipline. SAI is administered by the NYC Department of Education's Office of Arts and Special Projects. Students major in dance, drama, film, instrumental music, vocal music, photography, or visual art. The program is designed to help them: 1) broaden their skills & creativity; 2) explore career options in the arts; 3) build portfolios & audition skills in preparation for further study at a specialized high school, college, or conservatory. Students work with Department of Education arts specialists, partnering cultural organizations, and expert guest artists.
ETA's Support
ETA is now collaborating with the Department of Education as a partial funder of the Summer Arts Institute. In 2010 ETA also helped facilitate SAI's move from Stuyvesant High School in downtown Manhattan to its new home, the ETA-supported, newly-constructed Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Astoria, Queens at the Kaufman Astoria Studios Complex.
